"I am primarily a self-taught artist with a firm foundation in technical training…my inspirations include architectural metal artists that span the 20th century including Raymond Subes, Edgar Brandt, Antonio Gaudi, Albert Paley and Paul Kiss."
Born in eastern Kentucky, Matthew Maynard has been working in metal since the age of 12, when
an interest was sparked after reading the Foxfire series of books. Soon afterward, a small
cobbled–together coal forge was set up in his grandfather's barn and a broken tractor axle
became his first makeshift anvil.
In his late teens, Maynard lived near Asheville, North Carolina, where he trained and worked in welding and machining. Since his return to Kentucky, he has turned his passion of working metal into his sole profession as an artist/blacksmith. With his wife Karine, he owns Maynard Studios, Inc., in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky.
