Showcasing the Arts

April 2015 Featured Artist: Dean Hill

Dean Hill It took a year to build my art gallery/studio in 2012-13, which limited the expanse of my travels for photography. Therefore, I photographed close to home in eastern Kentucky. During that time I became even more fascinated with how the ordinary can become extraordinary given the dynamic conditions and wonderful light of Appalachia. I am continuing to explore this approach even after my gallery has opened its doors.

Capturing the moment has become the inspiration and key for my photography. Foggy mornings on Pine Mountain, tranquil reflections on one of our local lakes and streams or a fleeting mid-April blizzard coating our colorful redbuds—all involve being there in mind as well as body. I constantly remind myself of the need to slow down from our modern pace and allow myself to be in the moment.

I am also looking at the "lack of color" in photography for an avenue of expression. Techniques used long ago in Asian paintings, where touches of color were used for punctuation, are what I am experimenting with—through a lens. It's another direction of creativity that has me excited!
