Valera Brooks Valera Brooks

As a retired art teacher in Marshall County Schools and longtime president of the Marshall County Arts Commission, Valera Brooks continues to devote her time to the art program at Benton Middle School. She was instrumental in the development of the Marshall County Art Center, which, upon its opening in 2014, provided arts activities never before offered in the area and ignited an interest and awareness of art throughout Marshall County.

For the past three years Brooks has been committing almost all of her time at Playhouse in the Park in Murray, working with teens, children and young people with disabilities.

Through her involvement with the Marshall County Arts Commission, Brooks started several summer programs for K-12 students, including theater, music and visual arts programs.

Award nominator Chris Fortenberry wrote: “Valera Brooks has been instrumental in having the vision for our Community Arts Center, and because of her devotion and hard work this vision has become a reality for our county.”
