Community Scholars Program

The Kentucky Arts Council strongly encourages you to read and understand the grant guidelines before accessing the application.

About the Program

The Community Scholars Program trains members of a community in documentation, interpretation and dissemination of their unique local cultural resources and traditional art forms.

Training consists of several sessions and occurs twice a year in different communities across the state. Certification as a Community Scholar opens up many opportunities for future research projects.

Like all programs of the arts council, the Community Scholars Program is guided by the agency's core values. Successful applications will embody these core values, and all applicants are strongly encouraged to read and reflect upon them before submitting an application.

Remembering the Reedys

A blog that celebrates historic Harlan musicians John and Frances Reedy and their contributions to Bluegrass and Rockabilly music. Community Scholars Timi Reedy and Tammy Clemons collect and present ongoing documentation about the Reedys’ music, family, and related topics.

 

Funeral Traditions of the South

A regional traveling exhibit based on pictures and interviews collected by Community Scholar and photographer Carol Shutt.

 

The Mountain Mushroom Festival

Located in Irvine, this festival presents mushroom hunting and foodway traditions. Community Scholars Francine Bonny and Mary Reed have documented and presented morel mushroom culture as well as Kentucky agate traditions at the festival.

 

Horse Cave Stories

A companion to the interactive cell phone walking tour of downtown Horse Cave that examines culture, traditions and history of the city both above ground and underground.

Any person or organization interested in conserving cultural heritage in Kentucky.

Community Scholar Responsibilities

 

  • Participate in six Community Scholar training sessions in your area.
  • Complete an introductory community documentation project.
  • Participate in occasional professional development opportunities.
  • Support and promote the traditional arts and culture of your area.
