Lexington Bach Choir

Founded in 2007 by Richard Sowers, The Lexington Bach Choir exists for the purposes of: performing the music of Johann Sebastain Bach and other master composers of like stature; enlightening, entertaining and educating the public about the life and work of Johann Sebastian Bach and similar master composers; presenting musical works through the single and combined talents of chorus and orchestra; providing professional performing opportunities with high artistic standards for exceptional singers and instrumentalists; and fostering the artistic development of outstanding young artists.

The choir is comprised of 16 auditioned singers, ranging from full-time graduate students to music and non-music professionals. All have individually attained a distinguished degree of vocal accomplishment. Vocal soloists for concerts are selected from the chorus members.

In the fall of 2009, Marlon G. Hurst was appointed artistic director and conductor. A professional choral conductor since 1992, he has conducted choirs in Kentucky and Georgia. As a choral singer, Mr. Hurst was a member of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus and Chamber Chorus, directed by Robert Shaw, and of the Atlanta Singers, a professional chamber choir. He has also sung under the baton of Helmuth Rilling, Andre Previn, Neville Mariner, Sir David Wilcocks and other notable conductors. Mr. Hurst is currently the full-time director of music and arts at First Presbyterian Church, Lexington, Ky. He holds a bachelor’s degree in sacred music and a master of music in choral conducting.

The choir is accompanied by Dr. Jeff Jones, the organist and choirmaster at The Presbyterian Church in Danville, Ky. He holds a doctor of musical arts degree in church music from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky.
