THE NEXT GREAT WRITERS CONTEST
The Next Great Writers Contest, Carnegie Center, Lexington, Ky.
Deadline: May 12. The Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning invites writers to submit manuscripts of fiction or nonfiction prose (up to 12 double-spaced pages) or poetry (up to 5 poems) to its 6th Annual Next Great Writers Contest. Entry fee. Cash prizes.

WORD HOTEL
Deadline: May 31. Word Hotel, the literary magazine published by the BFA in Creative Writing at Spalding University is accepting literature, illustrations, photographs and photographs of artwork for the summer/fall issue to be published in Aug. They welcome submissions in all genres and a multitude of styles, including experimental, and are looking particularly for writers who have not yet published a first book. Writers may submit up to three poems (any length), short fiction or creative nonfiction up to 2,500 words, and hybrid texts. ARTS WRITERS GRANT PROGRAM
Deadline: June 6. Creative Capital and the Warhol Foundation have partnered to offer an Arts Writers Grant Program to support individual writers whose work addresses contemporary visual art through grants ranging from $3,000 to $50,000. It was founded in recognition of both the financially precarious situation of arts writers and their indispensable contribution to a vital artistic culture. The Arts Writers Grant Program aims to support the broad spectrum of writing on contemporary visual art, from general-audience criticism to academic scholarship.

KENTUCKY HER STORY 2012
Deadline: June 15. A new e-zine journal to be published in the Summer of 2012 is now accepting submissions for a collection of short stories about Kentucky women. Authors can be any gender. Stories should be 2,000 – 10,000 words. No exceptions on length, and no poetry. Digital entries only. No fees. Notice of acceptance sent by August 1. WRESTLING WITH WORDS: STEPPING INTO THE RING WITH POETRY
May 11 – 13, 2012. Former Kentucky Poet Laureate Richard Taylor will lead a workshop at Pine Mountain Settlement School in Pine Mountain, Ky., as part of the school’s Spring Arts Weekend. Taylor will lead discussions on the anatomy of a successful poem and the use of the natural environment as a means of exploring the possibilities of poetry.

RITES OF PASSAGE
Generations Literary Journal
Deadline: May 15, 2012. Generations Literary Journal is a bound journal comprised of solicited work and submissions. We encourage and welcome submissions of poetry, short fiction, personal narrative and artwork from writers and artists who represent all generations. Each issue is themed. The theme for the upcoming issue is Rites of Passage.

WRITING, REVISING & PUBLISHING YOUR POEMS
May 19, 2012, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. In this workshop, participants will examine ways in which a writer can develop systems to help form better pieces. Using William Stafford’s poetry and writings about craft and vocation as a lens, participants will take a look at how organization and consistency can inform the processes and methods by which we create. The workshop is designed for poets, but open to writers of all genres. Location: The Carnegie Center in Lexington, Ky. Fee: $40.

WOMEN WHO WRITE: WRITING CONTEST
Deadline: June 30, 2012. Women Who Write, Inc., a Louisville, Ky.-based writing organization, invites all women writers to enter the organization’s annual writing contest. The 2012 prizes are $300 for first place, $200 for second place and $100 for third place. The winners’ works will be published in Calliope, the group’s annual anthology, and each winner will receive up to five copies of the book. The contest is open to women writers 18 years old or older.

ONLINE CREATIVE JOURNAL SEEKING SUBMISSIONS
ninepatch: A Creative Journal for Women and Gender Studies, an online journal affiliated with Eastern Kentucky University’s Women and Gender Studies Department, will start accepting submissions in Jan. 2012. For the first year, the journal will be online. Each year following, one print edition will be released to raise funds to contribute to various charities.
