What is a cultural district?

A cultural district is a well-recognized, labeled, mixed-use area of a community featuring a high concentration of cultural amenities that attract local residents and visitors alike. Cultural districts can be found in any type of community, from small and rural to large and urban.

Who’s eligible?

Any Kentucky community willing to form a steering committee that will take formal responsibility for the administration, planning, development, implementation, assessment and continued operations of the district.

What’s the deadline to apply?

Organizations must submit an intent to apply for FY2013 by July 1, 2012. Completed applications will be due November 1, 2012, at 4:30 p.m. Eastern time.

How do I apply?

  1. Carefully review the program guidelines. [Download Adobe Reader]
  2. Complete the letter of intent.
  3. Complete the application.
  4. Select supporting materials for submission.
  5. Mail us a printout of your application with your supporting materials.

If my cultural district receives certification,
what are my responsibilities?

  • Sign an agreement form.
  • Send a letter to each of your legislators. (Sample)
  • Acknowledge the Kentucky Arts Council when promoting your cultural district. (How?)
  • Submit a public value report at the end of each fiscal year, demonstrating the impact the certification had on the community. [Questions?]
