ARTIST'S STATEMENTMy imagination is imbued with practicality and hope. I look to daily life, surroundings, and memories to perceive beauty and imagine possibilities. I have an appreciation for subtlety that I attribute to having grown up on the vast High Plains of Kansas. To find beauty there is not easy. A person has to be open to seeking it out. The wide-open flat space, dotted infrequently with homely but practical vernacular architecture seemed boring. Only after leaving did I realize how my eye had been trained to find lasting aesthetic pleasure in things seemingly commonplace. I find beauty in geometric forms and I find beauty in character-giving imperfections. A slightly mismatched edge between two slabs of clay, a seam that has opened slightly during the firing, or an edge that retains it's freshly cut appearance are examples of clay displaying its intrinsic beauty. Layers of ceramic slips and stains form the first layer of sheer color on the work. Then a firing method and glaze are chosen to enhance particular qualities of each piece. I hope my work reveals a quiet, intriguing beauty. |
