ARTIST'S STATEMENTI am an experientialist. In the everyday world of bodies we have experiences. Some are corporeal; some are designated as metaphysical, yet all together they comprise what we consider to be our lives. Any experience that I am aware of may be the beginning concept of a work. With The Six Robes Of Small Happiness, I create hanging markers similar to banners. Each one is similar yet slightly different, not unlike our genetic code. The canvas connects to an organic anchor at each end but through the connection makes a continuous form. As such they may trigger an association with the grace and strength of unification. With the Academic Robe, I critique a system preoccupied with quantification and collection. There is a subtle judgment of the failure that results from inappropriate usage of these systems; such as the random cutting of the yardstick to make it fit as an overall element. Can everything be measured in a manner which ignores complexity and diversification? The key rings are the empty receptacles for keys, which stand for opportunity more than security. That they are empty and acting as a joining mechanism for the truncated yardsticks would be a reinforcement of my desire to raise questions about how we organize, fund and implement education. Additionally my work employs the process and phenomena of connection. Regardless of whether the piece is a site independent installation, experimental theater or a discrete object it will display some form of connection that operates both as a corporeal element and metaphor. oceans & deserts I make work that is connected to an experience, a personal experience. The viewer is connected to that experience through the work. In this way, I too am connected with that viewer. |
