Cheryl Pan is a distinguished dance artist renowned for her extensive professional training in Chinese classical and folk dances. After years of rigorous training in China, she has dedicated her career to teaching various Chinese ethnic dances, many of which are rarely seen in the United States. Pan has taught hundreds of children and adults from diverse backgrounds, sharing her passion and expertise in Chinese dance.
As the artistic director of the Kentucky Chinese American Association (KYCAA), Pan has choreographed, directed, and hosted the Chinese New Year Celebration at the Lexington Opera House for seven consecutive years. Her artistic vision has been instrumental in the celebration’s success, transforming it into a sold-out event each year.
In addition to the New Year festivities, Pan also directs the dance performances for the Moon Festival celebration in the fall. Her leadership and dedication have attracted nearly 2,000 attendees annually to both the Chinese New Year and Moon Festival celebrations.
Pan was accepted into both the Kentucky Arts Council’s Performing Artists Directory and Teaching Artists Directory in 2008. This recognition has led to invitations for her to perform at various events and festivals in Lexington, Georgetown, Louisville, Owensboro, and Richmond. She has also made numerous radio and television appearances to share her expertise and promote Chinese dance.
In recognition of her contributions to the arts, Pan was honored as Person of the Month by Kentucky Monthly magazine and was named the Woman of 1,000 Dances by Southsider magazine. Through her work, Cheryl Pan continues to enrich the cultural landscape of Kentucky and beyond.

Receiving this prestigious distinction is a profound honor that signifies not just my personal journey, but also the importance of preserving and sharing our cultural traditions. This recognition encapsulates decades of dedication and passion for the arts, reinforcing my commitment to keeping our cultural heritage alive within our communities. Through dance, I strive to honor the past while inspiring new generations to connect with their roots and explore their identities.
Mentoring is a fundamental aspect of my artistic practice. I believe that as artists, we have a vital role in guiding others, helping them to develop their skills, explore their creativity, and express themselves authentically. Mentorship allows us to pass down knowledge and traditions, fostering a sense of continuity and belonging. By creating safe spaces for artists to practice their craft and discover their voices, we cultivate an inspired community open to new experiences. In doing so, we empower others to share their heritage through art, contributing to a vibrant tapestry of cultural expression.
One of my proudest accomplishments has been the workshops I’ve conducted around my “Fan Dance,” one of the first dances I introduced in Kentucky. This dance, beloved by both young and elderly students, transcends generations. The excitement I witness in my students when they master challenging movements is deeply rewarding. More than just a performance, the “Fan Dance” serves as a gateway for my students to engage with and celebrate cultural artistry. It creates a sense of community, where individuals from diverse backgrounds come together to support one another in their learning journey. This collective experience not only inspires and empowers my students but also helps them connect with their own cultural narratives.
Through my work, I aim to convey to non-Kentuckians the rich cultural tapestry of this region. Kentucky is home to vibrant roots and traditions, and my folk arts showcase the myriad perspectives and experiences that thrive here. My art reveals a place where diverse heritages coexist and flourish, where individuals can learn and share the “Fan Dance” in an environment of acceptance and collaboration. From the stages of the Lexington Opera House to community gatherings, my work reflects the creative spirit of Kentucky, demonstrating how our artistic expressions can unite and strengthen our communities. By celebrating our diverse cultures, we pave the way for a brighter, more inclusive future for all.
