2024 Folk Heritage Award: Cheryl Pan

Cheryl Pan is a distinguished dance artist renowned for her extensive professional training in Chinese classical and folk dances. After years of rigorous training in China, she has dedicated her career to teaching various Chinese ethnic dances, many of which are rarely seen in the United States. Pan has taught hundreds of children and adults from diverse backgrounds, sharing her passion and expertise in Chinese dance.

As the artistic director of the Kentucky Chinese American Association (KYCAA), Pan has choreographed, directed, and hosted the Chinese New Year Celebration at the Lexington Opera House for seven consecutive years. Her artistic vision has been instrumental in the celebration’s success, transforming it into a sold-out event each year.

In addition to the New Year festivities, Pan also directs the dance performances for the Moon Festival celebration in the fall. Her leadership and dedication have attracted nearly 2,000 attendees annually to both the Chinese New Year and Moon Festival celebrations.

Pan was accepted into both the Kentucky Arts Council’s Performing Artists Directory and Teaching Artists Directory in 2008. This recognition has led to invitations for her to perform at various events and festivals in Lexington, Georgetown, Louisville, Owensboro, and Richmond. She has also made numerous radio and television appearances to share her expertise and promote Chinese dance.

In recognition of her contributions to the arts, Pan was honored as Person of the Month by Kentucky Monthly magazine and was named the Woman of 1,000 Dances by Southsider magazine. Through her work, Cheryl Pan continues to enrich the cultural landscape of Kentucky and beyond.
