Mark Lenn Johnson is the president of Art Inc. Kentucky, a nonprofit arts incubator dedicated to supporting emerging artists across the state. Under his leadership, Art Inc. has transformed from a visionary concept into a thriving brick-and-mortar reality in Lexington’s East End. The organization provides professional development assistance, offering entrepreneurial classes covering a range of topics, from social media marketing to establishing a tax-compliant business.
Art Inc. has expanded its offerings to include ArtHouse Kentucky, a gallery located within The MET complex at Midland and East Third. This initiative features an online marketing site, ArtHouseKentucky.org, and encompasses the Artists’ Studios—a complex of workspaces for artists situated at 594 E. Third. Additionally, Johnson is spearheading the development of the Artists’ Village, which will feature 16 customized homes for working artists surrounding an oval green space that serves as both an art park and event venue. Five of these homes, including Johnson’s own, have already been completed, with more in the planning stages. Together, these ventures provide essential resources for the local visual arts community and the predominantly African American, historically neglected East End neighborhood, a transformation largely credited to Johnson’s efforts.
Growing up, Johnson fueled his imagination with comic books and a love for color. He honed his artistic skills working with beads and glass, studying under notable artists Laura Hallock, Jon Stokes, and Brook White. His photography has been exhibited internationally, with shows in Finland, Tokyo, Florence, and the Louvre Museum in Paris. His commissioned and production work is featured in private collections across the United States and abroad, including at Eastern Kentucky University’s John Grant Crabbe Main Library.

Receiving this award is an incredible honor and a profound affirmation of the impactful work being done in the arts. It not only acknowledges the efforts of our organization but also celebrates the dedication of our parent company, Community Ventures, and other like-minded organizations, such as the Kentucky Arts Council, along with the talented artists and creatives throughout Kentucky. This recognition underscores the transformative potential of the arts and serves as a powerful reminder of how our work can inspire, uplift, and create life-changing impacts in communities.
I am filled with immense pride, knowing that the efforts we are undertaking are making a meaningful difference. Most importantly, I accept this award on behalf of all the individuals and organizations in Kentucky that work tirelessly to support and promote the arts, elevate artists, and enrich the communities they touch with their creativity and beauty.
In my role as President of Art Inc., I have the unique privilege of mentoring fellow Kentucky artists and creatives. Mentorship can be an extraordinarily powerful tool, and I, along with my team, share experiences, provide guidance, and offer resources that help unlock and fulfill the artistic potential of emerging talents. This mentorship not only nurtures the artists themselves but also contributes to the broader economic vitality of our community. Throughout my 25-year career in small and micro business development, whether at Community Ventures or in my previous role as Assistant Director within the Cabinet for Economic Development’s Small Business Services Division, I have been dedicated to empowering individuals to thrive as entrepreneurs.
As an artist and in my role with Art Inc., I am fortunate to combine my personal artistic experiences with my professional background, helping fellow artists navigate the path to becoming successful creative entrepreneurs. Witnessing their growth and success is truly fulfilling and fuels my commitment to supporting and promoting Kentucky’s vibrant artistic community.
Reflecting on my journey in the arts, three life-changing milestones resonate deeply with me. In 2017, I was honored to be recognized as one of Art Tour International Magazine’s Top 60 Contemporary Artists in the World, culminating in an exhibition of my work in Florence, Italy. The previous year, I showcased my work at the Louvre Museum in Paris, thanks to an invitation from Ava Galleria, a gallery in Finland. Most recently, in 2022, I was honored to be juried into Kentucky Crafted, a long-held dream of mine.
On a professional level, as President of Art Inc. Kentucky, I take great pride in my team’s efforts to support Kentucky artists, having facilitated over $200,000 in sales through our retail gallery, ArtHouse Kentucky – the vast majority of which has gone back to the artists to help them grow their businesses and support their families. We are exceptionally proud of the diverse group of Kentucky Crafted artists we have mentored and encouraged to apply to the program.
