Derby Exhibit opens May 2

This year’s Governor’s Derby Exhibit, “Long Shot,” is now on display at the Paul Sawyier Public Library in Frankfort, kicking off a showcase of Kentucky artists inspired by the spirit and tradition of the Derby season.

Part of the Governor’s Derby Celebration activities, the exhibit will be on display through July 5, and features work from 41 artists representing communities across the commonwealth. Artists were invited to explore the idea of the long shot: risk, resilience, and the dreamers who remind us that anything can happen between the gate and the finish line.

“The Governor’s Derby Exhibit is a celebration of both our state’s most iconic event and the incredible talent of Kentucky artists,” said KAC Executive Director Chris Cathers. “This year’s exhibit brings together voices and perspectives from across the commonwealth, showcasing the creativity that makes Kentucky so special.”

From painting, mixed media and conceptual work, the exhibit reflects the energy, history, and cultural significance of the Kentucky Derby while highlighting the creativity of artists statewide. Participating artists hail from 24 counties, demonstrating the depth and diversity of Kentucky’s artistic community.

“I always look forward to the annual Governor’s Derby exhibit and am very proud to be selected along with many talented artists,” Fran Redmon said. “It is an honor to be recognized and have my work presented to the public during this special time in our state. It’s always a beautiful showcase of creative work. The ongoing recognition and support by the governor and the Kentucky Arts Council is very important to the arts  and to working artists in our state.”

The Governor’s Derby Exhibit is free and open to the public at the Paul Sawyier Public Library, located at 319 Wapping Street in Frankfort.
