Experience Kentucky’s Rich Traditions at the Kentucky Crafted Market!

Join us for the Kentucky Crafted Market on March 8 and 9 at the Kentucky Horse Park Alltech Arena, where some of Kentucky’s finest artists will showcase their work. While you explore incredible handcrafted goods, be sure to visit the Folklife Zone — a unique space where tradition bearers will demonstrate the artistry woven into Kentucky’s culture.

The Kentucky Folklife Program and the Kentucky Arts Council are proud to present folk and traditional artists who are keeping these time-honored practices alive. Meet the artists, learn about their crafts, and even try your hand at a few activities!

Featured Demonstrating Artists:

White Oak Basket Making with Scott Gilbert & Micah Wiles
The Highway 31W corridor has a long history of white oak basket making, a distinctive folk art that once lined roadside stands near Mammoth Cave. Scott Gilbert, a skilled basket maker from Scottsville, and his apprentice, Micah Wiles of Somerset, will demonstrate the intricate process — starting with selecting the perfect tree and ending with a beautifully woven basket that reflects generations of tradition.

Banjo Making with Arthur Hatfield (Saturday only)

Master banjo maker Arthur Hatfield of Glasgow has been crafting high-quality bluegrass banjos since 2001. His instruments, played by renowned musicians like Doyle Lawson and Dean Osborne, are a testament to Kentucky’s deep-rooted bluegrass tradition. Arthur, the 2025 Homer Ledford Award recipient, will be sharing his skills and stories about the art of banjo making.

Quilting with Angelique Shah & Chaney Williams (Sunday only)
Quilting has long been a thread connecting Kentucky communities, and Angelique Shah of Shepherdsville has made it her mission to share this art form. A talented quilter with a background in fashion design and aviation mechanics, Angelique now runs Mojo Quilts and More. Her apprentice, Chaney Williams of Elizabethtown, is passionate about preserving this tradition and teaching the next generation about quilting’s cultural significance in Kentucky.

Don’t miss this chance to meet these incredible artists, explore Kentucky’s living traditions, and engage in hands-on activities that celebrate our state’s rich folklife. Our Kentucky Folklife Program staff will be on hand to guide you through the experience.

Mark your calendars for March 8 and 9! We can’t wait to see you at the Kentucky Crafted Market!
